Spain is much more than just a holiday destination. It has a colourful history and like the UK has undergone many invasions and occupations during its existence. The longest occupation was that of the Moors (the common name for Muslims from North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula), the evidence of which is still seen throughout most of Spain today in the architecture and some of the customs.

The country of Spain is split up into regions similar to what we would call counties in the UK and within these regions there are provinces. So for example the region of Andalucia is split up into several provinces; Huelva, Cadiz, Sevilla, Malaga, Cordoba, Jaen, Granada and Almeria.

Many people will know the main Costa's of Spain, the most famous being the Costa de Sol, the Costa Blanca and the Costa Brava. However, some of the previously lesser known Costa's are now becoming firm favourites with tourists and even property buyers. These include the Costa de la Luz (running along the Atlantic coastline), the Costa Tropical, the Costa Almeria, the Costa Calida and the Costa Azahar. Within all of these destinations you will find so much culture spanning many different religious beliefs although the two most prominent are Muslim and Catholic, the latter being the one practised by the majority of the population in Spain today.
