Detailed information about Gibraltar (GIB) Airport

Not officially part of the Costa del Sol but certainly close enough to be considered as an airport serving the Costa del Sol, Gibraltar Airport acually lies just on the other side of the Spanish border town of La Linea.

A recent historical three way agreement between Gibraltar, Spain and the UK means that for the first time flights from Gibraltar Airport to Spanish locations are now operating. It is anticipated that there will be an expansion of the airport, possibly with a new terminal building on the Spanish side of the border for "internal" flights.

That aside, there are some flights operating beween Gibraltar Airport and the mainland UK from either London Gatwick Airport (LGW) to Gibraltar via GB Airways and British Airways (usually the same plane) or Luton Airport (LUT) to Gibraltar Airport via Monarch Airlines.

Currently there are 3 flights to Gibraltar Airport from Gatwick arriving at Gibraltar 11.00am, 4.45pm and 6.45pm and 1 flight from Luton to Gibraltar arriving at 6.07pm.

About Gibraltar Airport

Gibraltar Airport is a small airport with just one terminal buiding. Access to the airport requires crossing the border from Spain to Gibraltar and going through customs. If you are flying out from Gibraltar Airport and are relying on a taxi, you will not be taken across the border. However it is just a couple of minutes by foot to the terminal building. The same applies when arriving at Gibraltar Airport, if you need a taxi you will have to cross the border first but there is a taxi rank as you exit customs.

Traffic in and out of Gibraltar can be heavy at most times during the year, especially in the summer so unless you have a hire car to drop off, we do recommend you consider walking across the border as opposed to driving.

The check in desks for Gibraltar Airport are located to the right as you enter the airport building. There is a cafeteria just above the check in desks which has a sun terrace open during the summer.

The passport control and dpearture lounge is access via the ground floor, in the opposite direction to the check in desks.

How do I get to Gibraltar Airport?

Obviously it depends where you are coming from but if you are coming from the east (from the direction of Malaga, Marbella, Estepona) you can take the A7 / E15 - N340 in the direction of Algeciras. (If coming from further up the coast you can take the AP7 toll road). You go past Sotogrande, San Roque Golf Club and the first La Linea / Alciadesa turning. Keep going to the next exit which is sign posted La Linea / Gibraltar. Take this exit and turn right at the very first junction. Then continue round a fairly sharp bend to the left and you will come to a busy junction. Basically you want to go straight across this junction (this invloves joining the road and taking the very first exit on thr left). Now you have to turn left in the direction of La Linea.

Stay on this road and you will pass the oil refinery on your right. Go straight across all roundabouts you encounter and the road will narrow to one lane for a while. It will then open up in to two lanes and run alongside the sea wall. Keep going until you see the sign post for Gibraltar (if you are driving across you will be taken off to the right in order to come back round to the entrance to Gibraltar). If you are not driving across keep going and you will see the border on your right.

There are a couple of underground car parks on your left by the side of McDonalds.

Where can I hire a car at Gibraltar Airport?

There are a few car hire firms at Gibraltar. If you hire your car in Gibraltar you will have to joing the traffic to get out of Gibraltar (if of course you are heading for Spain).

We would recommend that if you are heading for mainland Spain you hire a car from the Spanisg side of the border. It will be much easier for picking up and dropping off your car and you will have a Spanish plated car too.

What airlines fly to Malaga Airport

As mentioned above the airlines that fly to Gibraltar at the moment are Monarch Airlines, GB Airways and British Airways. From Spain Iberia provide flights to and from Madrid.

How long does it take to get the Gibraltar Airport from the UK?

Generally it will be the same flight times as between Spain and the UK although you might find that it can be slightly longer due to the routes taken but expect journey times of 2 1/2 hours.
